چکیده

We describe recent theoretical and experimental progress on making objects invisible. Ideas for devices that would have once seemed fanciful may now be at least approximately realized physically, using a new class of artificially structured materials, metamaterials. The equations that govern a variety of wave phenomena, including electrostatics, electromagnetism, acoustics and quantum mechanics, have transformation laws under changes of variables which allow one to design material parameters that steer waves around a hidden region, returning them to their original path on the far side. Not only are observers unaware of the contents of the hidden region, they are not even aware that something is being hidden; the object, which casts no shadow, is said to be cloaked. Proposals for, and even experimental implementations of, such cloaking devices have received the most attention, but other devices having striking effects on wave propagation, unseen in nature, are also possible. These designs are initially based ∗Department of Mathematics, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY 14627, USA. We recount the recent history of the subject and discuss some of the mathematical and physical issues involved.

Inverse Problems and Invisibility Cloaking for Fem Models and Resistor Networks

In this paper we consider inverse problems for resistor networks and for models obtained via the Finite Element Method (FEM) for the conductivity equation. These correspond to discrete versions of the inverse conductivity problem of Calderón. We characterize FEM models corresponding to a given triangulation of the domain that are equivalent to certain resistor networks, and apply the results to...

Electrical impedance tomography and Calderón’s problem

We survey mathematical developments in the inverse method of Electrical Impedance Tomography which consists in determining the electrical properties of a medium by making voltage and current measurements at the boundary of the medium. In the mathematical literature this is also known as Calderón’s problem from Calderón’s pioneer contribution [23]. We concentrate this article around the topic of...

Ill-Posed and Linear Inverse Problems

In this paper ill-posed linear inverse problems that arises in many applications is considered. The instability of special kind of these problems and it's relation to the kernel, is described. For finding a stable solution to these problems we need some kind of regularization that is presented. The results have been applied for a singular equation.

Inverse and Reverse 2-facility Location Problems with Equality Measures on a Network

In this paper we consider the inverse and reverse network facility location problems with considering the equity on servers. The inverse facility location with equality measure deals with modifying the weights of vertices with minimum cost, such that the difference between the maximum and minimum weights of clients allocated to the given facilities is minimized. On the other hand, the reverse c...

Inverse problems, invisibility, and artificial wormholes

We will describe recent theoretical and experimental progress on making objects invisible to electromagnetic waves. Maxwell’s equations have transformation laws that allow for design of electromagnetic parameters that would steer light around a hidden region, returning it to its original path on the far side. Not only would observers be unaware of the contents of the hidden region, they would n...

Inverse Problems in Imaging Systems and the General Bayesian Inversion Frawework

In this paper, first a great number of inverse problems which arise in instrumentation, in computer imaging systems and in computer vision are presented. Then a common general forward modeling for them is given and the corresponding inversion problem is presented. Then, after showing the inadequacy of the classical analytical and least square methods for these ill posed inverse problems, a Baye...
